Grasmere Gingerbread Shop Traditional Cumberland Rum Butter
An unusual and mouth-watering rum-flavoured sweet spread. It first appeared in the larders of West Cumbria in the 18th century following the international import of rum and spices into local trading ports. Delicious spread on oatcakes, buttered toast, crumpets or pancakes.
No one knows who invented this iconic West Cumbrian dish but it is as versatile as it is utterly scrumptious. Once a mainstay of christening celebrations where it was served in special wooden bowls, our award-winning version is perfect dolloped onto Grasmere Gingerbread®, melted over vanilla ice cream or served at Christmas with warmed mince pies and/or Christmas pudding.
